I have introduction page and music samples HERE. 2nd Annual LITTLE RIVER DRUM FESTIVALJAN 26 AND 27 at the Little River Campground in Okuti Valley Check out AJ's awesome little video of some of last years' happenings here: You tube video The DRUM Festival returns to the Little River Campground on the weekend of 26/27 January. A celebration to rhythm and beat and dance from around the globe the festival will include performance, workshops, campfire jams and dance workshops. Takumi Japanese Drum group, Doug Brush percussion, Mark Zonka and Joseph Chintango will be some of the acts performing rhythms from Africa, the Middle East, South America as well as some contempory drum circle jams. Held in the native habitat of Manaia at the campground the program will be a moving progression of concerts with different groups performing in unique locations in the bush, beside the river, under the trees and around the campfire. The event will run from midday on the Saturday 26 January and close 3pm on Sunday 27 January. The area has camping facilities for those keen to stay overnight. WONTANARA, our professional drum and dance group has several gigs coming up. First we'll be celebrating the Winter Solstice at the MASSIVE party, just outside Christchurch on June 18. Then we'll be playing for a benefit for the Christchurch Green Party on June 25, and finally we'll be opening for the MUNDI CD release party at the Loons in Lyttelton on July 9. Hope to see you at one of these! The time for an African dance class has arrived! After much thought and discussion, we’ve decided to try out a class on Tuesday evenings, from 8:30-9:45pm, at the Woolston Club, directly after the drum class. I know this is a bit of a late time frame, so we’ll see how it goes for a few months and then re-evaluate. I’m pretty confident that it will be great, though! As this will be a dedicated dance class, with professional drum accompaniment, fee will be $10 a class. Classes will start on Tuesday, 31 May. See you there!!! Well, first news since our devastating Feb 22 earthquake... I hope everybody is coping OK. My teaching studio at the Chch School of Music is gone with the rest of building, but I've been doing private lesson house calls. I've also found new places for group classes - the Woolston Club and the Lyttelton Yacht Club - see Percussion Classes page for more info. Looking forward to being a part of Christchurch's recovery and renaissance using the power of the drum for healing and community building! NEW LYTTELTON WEST AFRICAN DRUM CLASSES!!!! STARTING FEB 14 AT THE WUNDERBAR!!!! 7:00-8:15. I'm so happy to be starting to do things in this awesome little town! Touring the South Island with Mundi the weekend ot Feb. 10-13. Cool Band! I'm playing kit, tabla, djembe, and some others. Hokitika, Westport, Nelson, and Picton. Played drumset with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra in front of about 80,000 Feb. 5, 2011. We played a bunch of swing numbers with Chant et Danse (singing and dancing, of course) including Sing Sing Sing and In the Mood. Also did Europe's Final Countdown (!!!) (Rock and Roll, Baby!) and Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody with choreographed fireworks! What a gig! Heading off for a bunch of Kirtan dates with Dave Stringer in Australia this March. Last year was great - I'm really looking forward to it! Kai, Elena, Chris and I (most of WONTANARA) did 4 days of workshops at the LUMINATE 2011 the last weekend of January.Luminate is an earth friendly festival of music, art, dance, creativity and sustainability on the top of beautiful Takaka hill. Did a radio show on Volcano Radio, Lyttelton, NZ on Sun. Jan. 23rd, 2011 with my friends Kai and Elena. We played 2 hours of mostly classic Afro-pop with some newer African Music and some folkloric stuff thrown in. Can't wait to do it again. Thanks Carmel, Dave C., and Simon.
